In a Super Bowl 58 thriller, the Chiefs scored an historic 25-22 overtime victory over the 49ers to claim a second straight title. The 49ers had a strong first half leading 10-3, but the Chiefs rallied in the final 30 minutes to tie the game. In overtime, the Chiefs responded to a 49ers field gold with a game-winning touchdown, denying the 49ers a second touch of the ball in these new overtime rules.
The Chiefs were guided by star Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes who threw for 333 yards, 2 TDs and was 34 of 46 passing. After a slow start, Travis Kelce had 93 yards receiving, 9 receptions, all in front of new girlfriend Taylor Swift.
For the 49ers, Brock Purdy had a solid Super Bowl debut as he finished with 255 yards passing, 1 TD, zero picks and was 23 of 38 passing. Christian McCaffrey rumbled for 80 yards rushing and caught 80 yards receiving with one touchdown. The running back was all but unstoppable during the game except in the third quarter with San Francisco went away from the run.
The Chiefs tallied 455 total yards, 24 first downs, 2 turnovers and 6 penalties. They were 9 of 19 on third downs. The 49ers finished with 382 total yards, 23 first downs, 2 turnovers and 6 penalties. They were just 3 of 12 on third downs.
This was the second-ever overtime in the Super Bowl after the famous Super Bowl 51 when the Atlanta Falcons blew a 28-3 halftime lead against the New England Patriots. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was the OC for that Falcons team.
