Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has established himself as the NFL’s most effective chain-moving runner in 2026, leading the league with 50 rushing first downs entering Week 9.
The 24-year-old superstar has been a driving force behind Detroit’s offensive success, consistently turning rushing attempts into fresh sets of downs and keeping opposing defenses on their heels.
Gibbs has already accumulated 773 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 157 carries this season, averaging an impressive 4.9 yards per attempt. Even more remarkable, nearly one-third of his rushing attempts have resulted in a first down.
His 50 rushing first downs lead the NFL by 10 over Buffalo Bills running back James Cook, who ranks second with 40.
Kansas City Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III sits third with 39, followed by Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson and Pittsburgh’s Jaylen Warren, who are tied for fourth with 37 apiece.
The numbers illustrate just how valuable Gibbs has become to the Lions’ offense.
While rushing yards and touchdowns typically dominate conversations about the league’s best running backs, rushing first downs provide another important measurement of offensive effectiveness.
Every first down extends a possession, creates additional scoring opportunities and helps keep an opposing offense on the sideline.
For Detroit, Gibbs has become one of the NFL’s most reliable weapons in those situations.
His production is particularly impressive considering that he has played just seven games, averaging more than seven rushing first downs per contest.
At his current pace, Gibbs would finish a 17-game season with approximately 121 rushing first downs, assuming he maintained the same production and played every game.
Cook has also enjoyed a tremendous season in Buffalo, producing 707 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, while Walker has accumulated 770 rushing yards and six scores.
Robinson, meanwhile, leads this group in total rushing yards with 780, demonstrating that explosive production and first-down efficiency don’t always produce identical rankings.
One of the more intriguing players on the leaderboard is Warren, who has generated 37 rushing first downs on just 119 carries. His 31.1% first-down rate is nearly identical to Gibbs’ 31.8%, illustrating how efficiently both runners are converting opportunities into new sets of downs.
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor ranks sixth with 35, followed by Tampa Bay’s Bucky Irving, Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams and Dallas’ Javonte Williams with 34 each.
As Detroit prepares for its Week 9 road matchup against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, November 8, Gibbs will have another opportunity to extend his advantage over the rest of the league.
The Lions have one of football’s most dangerous offensive weapons, and Gibbs is proving that his value goes well beyond rushing yards and touchdowns.
He’s moving the chains more frequently than any running back in football — and helping Detroit sustain drives in the process.
