It requires fast starts, consistent execution and the ability to protect a lead from beginning to end.

Through the first eight weeks of the season, Chicago has done it better than anyone.

The Bears lead the league with five wins without trailing, followed by the Jacksonville Jaguars with four. Four other teams are tied for third with three such victories apiece: the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers.

It’s a statistic that highlights a team’s ability to dictate the flow of a game rather than constantly having to respond to an opponent.

By avoiding deficits, teams can maintain offensive balance, establish their running games and force opponents into more predictable situations. Playing with a lead also creates opportunities for defenses to pressure quarterbacks who are forced to throw more frequently.

Chicago’s five wire-to-wire victories — including last night’s resounding win over the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks — are particularly noteworthy because they reflect an ability to control games from start to finish, rather than relying exclusively on late-game comebacks.

Jacksonville’s four victories without trailing are another impressive achievement, placing the Jaguars ahead of several of the NFL’s established contenders. They are the lone AFC team at the top of the list.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, seven teams have yet to record a single victory without trailing this season.

The Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans have all failed to win a game in which they never fell behind.

That doesn’t necessarily mean those teams haven’t enjoyed success. It simply means every victory they’ve earned has required overcoming a deficit at some point during the game.

While comeback victories demonstrate resilience, consistently playing from behind can be a difficult formula to sustain over an entire season.

For now, the Bears have mastered one of football’s simplest winning formulas: Get ahead, stay ahead and never give the opponent a lead.

2026 NFL Games Won Without Trailing
Through Week 8

Chicago Bears 5
Jacksonville Jaguars 4
Green Bay Packers 3
Kansas City Chiefs 3
Minnesota Vikings 3
San Francisco 49ers 3

Seven teams with zero: Cleveland, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Tennessee.

The Chicago Bears have established themselves as the NFL’s best team at playing from ahead in 2026, leading the league with five victories in which they never trailed entering Week 9.
